Greetings Governors,
Something brand new for you all to get your teeth into today!
The Hardware Store is a gameplay add-on for Outlaws and introduces a new concept to the game: Equipment!
There are two ways to play with the expansion: The Armory and The Store.
The Armory is a “draft” mechanic where both players will draw a hand of four cards and pick one before swapping the others for the cards their opponent passes them. This continues until both players have chosen 3 cards. Both players then discard their remaining card without showing it to their opponent. You’ll therefore be holding 1 card your opponent doesn’t know about and 2 out of 3 cards that he has seen.
These cards include items such as:
- Deputy Sheriff’s Star: Confers the ability of the Sheriff to any character (apart from the Governor of course).
- The Boiler Plate: Protects the Governor from an Assassination attempt.
- Skeleton key: Confers the ability of the Reverend to any character
There’s plenty more of course, each with their own ability to help you mix things up and confuse your opponent!
During the game, you can spend two actions to send any character in the Main Street to the store and equip them with one of the objects you drafted. The character is not revealed and the card is simply slotted in-between the stand and the character card. Once equipped, they can be used whenever you please! Some are permanent whereas others can only be used once in which case simply remove the card and discard them after use.
As with all the elements we’ve brought to Outlaws during this campaign, The Armory opens up a whole new world of tricks and tactics for you to explore. For example: Yes, the Boiler plate is a very simple yet effective item but it’s also VERY obvious. If your opponent knows that you have that in hand, whoever you equip it to can become a target. So, what if you equipped it to a totally different character? Really try and lure out their Hitman? Once again, the limits to uses of these cards are limited only by your imagination and guile!
But that’s just the half of it!
The Store works in a slightly different fashion. First of all, you replace the 4 Bogus tokens in the token set with the 5 “Gold Nugget” Tokens. Gold Nuggets can be picked up by any character that can pick up votes and are used as currency at the store. For one action, you can send a character to the store to spend all or some of your tokens. There are 3 votes (2$), 3 Handcuffs (3$) and 3 Bullets (3$).
Once in your possession these work exactly as if they were a token allowing you to make more coordinated plays and ensures that all your actions spent searching for tokens are rewarded! This also means that gameplay is more aggressive as there’s a lot more Handcuffs and Bullets available! Also, as a gold nugget is recycled back into the supply when it’s spent, you’ve got quite the pile to go through!
Of course, you can play both of these modes at the same time and they are also compatible with all the other additional content included in the Kickstarter. Also, all the contents will fit into the core box! Each set is for two players. If you want enough tokens and cards for a 3-4 player game you will need to purchase two sets.
To purchase an optional buy simply click on the "manage my pledge" button in the top right hand corner of the Kickstarter page. On the next page there will be a panel with the details of your pledge. Hit “Modify my Pledge” and in the panel that appears, in the “amount” box, you simple add the sum of the Add-ons you wish to purchase to your current total. It’s as Easy as that! Afterwards, during the Pledge Manager phase that comes after the end of the campaign, we’ll ask you to confirm exactly what you’d like to purchase!
Shipping and the Hardware Store: With more material comes more weight which means the shipping cost increases. Obviously for such a small pack of cards the impact will be minimal, about €0.30 more to be precise
So there you have it; one new stretch goal, two new ways to play, €5. That’s about as honest as you’ll get in the wild west!
